The thing is, traditional social media feeds are invisible to generative AI. Language models completely ignore posts on X, Instagram, and Facebook. They extract their grounding context from YouTube and Reddit.
We analyzed 150,093 AI citations across 66 top brands in 11 Nordic and Baltic countries. In our analysis, YouTube provided 2,713 direct citations. And then Reddit delivered 361 citations. The standard social platforms produced zero meaningful validation.
Why Models Prefer Long-Form Platforms
Language models need extensive, structured text. YouTube video transcripts offer high-density information that models easily process. Reddit provides deeply threaded, technical conversations where users debate specific brand features.
Short-form social posts lack the necessary context window for AI ingestion. Visual feeds provide zero textual grounding. Meaning, if you spend your budget on short posts, you are essentially entering into some chaos room and expecting AI to find your specific color pencil among markers and paints. It just happens that models skip the chaos.
Strategic Shift for Marketing Teams
Brands waste resources optimizing for ephemeral social feeds. Marketing departments need to pivot their focus to platforms that AI models actually read.
You can create long-form video content on YouTube. Ensure all videos have accurate, detailed manual transcripts. And then participate directly in technical Reddit communities. Answer questions with long-form, detailed explanations. Treat social media as an index for AI models. Only text-heavy, conversational platforms matter for AI visibility.
