Google’s new Gemini 3.5 Flash model has completely rebuilt its AI citation strategy. In our full-scale replication study analyzing 1,239 grounding citations across 66 regional brands, Gemini 3.5 Flash more than tripled its direct brand-owned website citation rate to 20.0%, up from 6.4% in previous models. Google has closed the citation gap with OpenAI and Perplexity.

Why This Study Matters

When we launched the Nordic-Baltic-CEE AI Reputation Index, Google's Gemini was a massive outlier in search grounding. While Perplexity cited official brand websites in 20.7% of its responses and OpenAI cited them in 16.2% of theirs, Gemini lagged at a low 6.4%.

Worse, Gemini routed the majority of its external citations through obscure "Vertex AI Search" redirect loops. This masked the origin of its brand facts, preventing CMOs and digital marketers from attributing and verifying the source of their AI reputation.

Today, Google announced Gemini 3.5 Flash. We bypassed the marketing decks and immediately ran a full-scale replication study across all 66 major European brands in our index.

We ran 132 structured probes, extracted 1,239 citations, and mapped the results. The data reveals a massive, structural realignment of Google’s search grounding engine.

Finding 1: Google Tripled Its Direct Brand Grounding Rate

In our replication test, Gemini 3.5 Flash cited the official brand domain in 20.0% of all citations. This represents a 3.1x increase over our baseline Gemini metrics (6.4%).

Google is now ahead of OpenAI (16.2%) and sits in a near-dead heat with Perplexity Sonar Pro (20.7%).

This means your official website has been elevated to a primary, trusted authority in Google’s real-time AI grounding layer.

Finding 2: The Syndicated Owned Media Layer

There is an even deeper dimension to Google’s new grounding strategy.

In addition to the 20.0% of citations pointing directly to official brand sites, another 3.4% of all citations are routed through regulated financial platforms, stock exchanges, and rating databases (like Nasdaq, S&P Global, Fitch, and Morningstar).

From an investor relations and corporate marketing standpoint, this is syndicated owned media. These sites host your official corporate filings, stock tickers, and legally binding disclosures.

Combined, nearly a quarter (23.4%) of Gemini’s entire grounding memory is now driven by official or syndicated corporate communications.

This explains why highly regulated sectors like banking and insurance drive the highest citation rate in our study at 27.4%. Gemini bypasses standard marketing copy in favor of structured, audited financial disclosures.

B2B brands see an 18.2% citation rate, while consumer-facing B2C brands sit at 17.7%.

Finding 3: Sourcing Profiles by Country

Our country-by-country breakdown reveals that geography heavily impacts Gemini's citation behaviors:

Gemini 3.5 Flash Grounding Profile by Market

  • Germany leads the region with a 32.1% direct brand website grounding rate.
  • Finland and Poland sit right behind at 27.4% and 27.1% respectively.
  • Sweden sits at the bottom of the list at 7.8%, heavily favoring third-party directories.

This is a structural signal. In markets where brands publish dense, multilingual utility content, Gemini relies on official domains. In markets dominated by lightweight promotional copy, the engine defaults to third-party publishers.

Finding 4: UGC and News Control the Long Tail

When Gemini bypasses your website, it relies on a highly concentrated set of external validation sources.

Excluding brand-owned sites, user-generated content (UGC) is the dominant driver of Gemini’s memory. Reddit is the single most cited third-party domain in our study, capturing 6.05% of all citations. Trustpilot follows at 3.95%, and Wikipedia accounts for 2.74%.

Meanwhile, traditional news and press publishers collectively make up 14.77% of Gemini's memory. These are split between international Tier-1 outlets (like The Guardian and Forbes, each at 0.56%) and trusted regional public broadcasters (like err.ee in Estonia at 0.65% and lsm.lv in Latvia at 0.56%).

Finding 5: Local Authority Ownership

When we analyze the top non-branded citations country-by-country, the localized validation pattern becomes clear:

Top Non-Branded Citations by Country on Gemini 3.5 Flash

  • In Latvia, regional public broadcaster lsm.lv is the second most cited third-party domain, capturing 6 citations.
  • In Sweden, global business platforms spglobal.com and forbes.com represent the primary validation layer behind Reddit.
  • In Norway and Finland, the consumer review platform trustpilot.com serves as the primary competitor to Reddit's influence.

Your AI visibility is local. If your brand is highly visible in global databases but missing from regional public broadcasters and local consumer forums, you will remain invisible in regional AI searches.

What This Means for CMOs (Starting Monday)

The release of Gemini 3.5 Flash is not just a speed update. It is a fundamental realignment of how Google coordinates real-time web knowledge.

1. Build Factual Utility

Standard marketing copy is ignored by AI search grounding. The brands that win high owned-media citation rates (like Kesko at 85.0% and Slovak Telekom at 75.0%) publish threat reports, financial tables, API documentation, and highly structured technical specifications. Give the model facts it can actually ingest.

2. Treat Stock Exchanges as Your New PR Channel

Because Gemini routes 3.4% of its citations through stock exchanges and rating databases, your investor relations team is now an active player in your AI optimization strategy. Ensure your syndicated profiles on Nasdaq, S&P Global, and Fitch are clean, current, and structured.

3. Monitor Reddit and Trustpilot Active Feeds

If Reddit (6.05%) and Trustpilot (3.95%) command 10% of your total AI reputation, they require active, daily management. Positive reviews on Trustpilot and active discussion threads on Reddit are no longer just social signals—they are the active validation layer of your AI brand profile.
