Which AI bots read you, and who clicks through

Two numbers your analytics tool cannot give you: requests from AI crawlers, and clicks from people who came out of an AI conversation.

Hook: Two numbers your analytics tool cannot give you: requests from AI crawlers, and clicks from people who came out of an AI conversation. One script tag counts both, and pulling the same report out of server logs costs EUR 360 to EUR 1,440.

What You'll Be Able To Do

  • Install one script tag before the closing body tag, and ask nobody outside marketing for anything else
  • Read clicks from people who were in an AI conversation over 7, 30 or 90 days, split per chat
  • Read requests from AI crawlers with a company name on every slice, never a raw user-agent string
  • Open the ten pages AI answers send people to, each row a live link
  • Give your CMO a change figure against the window before, with no spreadsheet to keep

Runtime: 5:50 | Difficulty: Advanced

Your CMO asks whether any of the AI work reaches anything, and you have no number to answer with. Two numbers settle it: how often AI systems fetch your pages, and how many people arrive on your website out of an AI conversation. Your analytics tool holds neither. Crawler traffic is filtered out of the report by design, and a visitor out of an AI app often arrives with no referrer, so the session is filed as direct. The answer sits in your server logs, and getting it out means matching user agents by hand.

What it costs today

A developer or analyst at EUR 90 an hour.

One-off report: pull CDN or origin logs, write user-agent matching, aggregate by bot and by day, add a referrer rule in analytics4 to 16 h at EUR 904 × 90 and 16 × 90EUR 360 to EUR 1,440
Keeping it current: rerun the extract, catch new user agents, reconcile against analytics2 to 4 h per month at EUR 902 × 90 and 4 × 90EUR 180 to EUR 360 per month
The same upkeep over a year24 to 48 h at EUR 9012 × 180 and 12 × 360EUR 2,160 to EUR 4,320 per year
Marketer planEUR 196 per month

Most teams never spend either figure. They run the report once for a board slide and never again, or they answer the question with an opinion. That is the honest baseline: zero euros and no number.

What the video shows

  1. The badge settings screen, with the tracking snippet in a code block. One script tag, before the closing body tag, carrying the id that ties every hit to this project.
  2. Copy the snippet. That is the whole install, and the only thing this asks of anyone outside marketing.
  3. The tag in place on a live page, with the browser network panel open.
  4. What the page posts per load: the page address, the referrer, the user agent. The response comes back empty, and nothing else leaves the page.
  5. The Statistics tab under Publishing. Two headline numbers, and a pill toggle for 7, 30 or 90 days, each window compared with the window straight before it.
  6. The human traffic chart, hovered: one line per chat over a mint total, so you see which model sent the people.
  7. The same clicks as a share of the whole, on one donut you can read straight into a deck.
  8. The bot donut: seventeen crawler user agents collapsed into five named labels, so you read a company you recognise.
  9. The ten pages AI answers send people to, ordered by arrivals, each row a live link you can open.
  10. Back on the two headline numbers, with the arithmetic against the plan price.

What you need

  • Marketer, EUR 196 a month.
  • A website you can add one script tag to, before the closing body tag.
  • Owner access on the project to switch the tag on. Reading the numbers afterwards needs member access.
  • A few days of traffic before the panels have anything to draw. Windows with no events are absent from the chart, so a quiet week disappears.
  • A little patience on test clicks. The screen caches for five minutes, so your own click may take that long to land.

Questions people ask

Does this count every crawler that hits my website? No. The count comes from the script on the page, so a crawler that takes your HTML and never runs JavaScript leaves no row. Read it as a floor; the real figure is higher.

Claude and Perplexity are on that screen. Do you measure AI answers on them? No. They appear there as places people clicked from and as crawler user agents, which is what a script on your page can see. Rankfor.AI runs its scans on Gemini, ChatGPT and Grok.

Will it tell me when something changes? No. There is no monitoring and no alerting. The screen recalculates when you open the tab, and every window carries its comparison with the one before it.

Somebody copies my link out of a chat into a fresh tab. Do I see that click? No. A click counts when the referrer is one of eight known chat hosts. A pasted URL arrives with no referrer, so it never reaches this count.

Watch it, then send the tag to whoever owns the website.
